Moscow dental market research for 2016


Dentistry is rightfully considered one of the most popular branches of medicine. It is characterized by a strong commercial component, which allows dental clinics, on the one hand, to feel confident even in difficult times of the financial crisis, but on the other, to receive relatively little support from the state health insurance system. In fact, the dental market is largely left to its participants, most of which are private clinics.

Volume and structure of the Moscow dental services market

The dental industry accounts for approximately 50% of the entire Russian market of paid medical services (data as of the beginning of 2016), being the most commercially oriented segment of the industry. However, the market for dental clinics is relatively poorly studied. One of the reasons for this was its lack of structure. The number of large chains is not so large, and the most active market participants are individual large and well-known clinics.

For a more complete picture of the Moscow dental market and its share in the all-Russian market, it is advisable to consider three main parameters:

  • number of clinics;
  • the scope of services provided and the cost of visiting a dentist;
  • market structure according to the form of medical institutions.

Number of dental clinics

The total number of dental institutions operating in Russia has decreased slightly over the past three years: at the beginning of 2016, there were 28.2 thousand clinics, which is 5.4% less than in the previous year. Moscow is, quite naturally, the largest market for dental services when compared with other domestic regions. At the beginning of 2022, there are 3,315 dental clinics operating in the capital, which significantly exceeds the number of similar medical institutions in other largest cities of Russia: St. Petersburg (1,137), Novosibirsk (430), Nizhny Novgorod (311). Moscow's share in the total number of hospitals providing dental services is approximately 13%.

However, when recalculating the number of dental clinics per 100 thousand residents, Moscow will take only 9th place (21 medical institutions per 100 thousand citizens), significantly inferior to Perm (28), Kazan and Samara (27 each) and several other cities.

Dental services market volume

In 2015, throughout the country, 238.2 million appointments were made in private and public dental clinics, which is 3.4% less than in 2014. In 2016, the trend not only continued, but the drop is projected to be even greater - approximately 7.3% (220.9 million admissions). In general, the Moscow market for dental services is changing in the same way as the all-Russian one.

The reduction in market capacity in physical terms, as well as in the number of operating clinics, is largely due to the fact that during the financial crisis, some employers are cutting back on VHI (voluntary health insurance) programs, which often include a package of dental services. In addition, specialized departments in many public clinics are closing, in addition to a fairly serious reduction in the number of private clinics.

It should be noted that in monetary terms, the volume of services provided by dental clinics in 2015 increased by 16.9% compared to 2014, amounting to 447.4 billion rubles. This is explained mainly by a sharp increase in the cost of 1 visit to a doctor - from 1551.8 to 1877.9 rubles, respectively, in 2014 and 2015. This trend will continue in 2016. The average cost of 1 visit to the dentist is forecast to be 2162.4 rubles, and the total volume of services provided is 477.7 billion rubles, which is more than the 2015 figures by 15.1% and 6.8%, respectively.

Structure of the Moscow dentistry market

As noted above, the Moscow dental market has not been actively studied until recently. For the first time, a large-scale, detailed and detailed analysis was undertaken by the Vademecum think tank in 2016. It collected and processed information that was relevant at the beginning of the year.

Another confirmation that the Moscow dental market is one of the most commercially oriented is the following data: the share of private metropolitan clinics in the total volume was 96%. The public sector accounts for only 4% of the market capacity. Therefore, further researchers focused mainly on private medical institutions, since by studying them, it is actually possible to obtain information about the market as a whole.

The share of clinics included in various dental networks in Moscow was approximately a third of the total, that is, 34%. The remaining two-thirds (66%) are represented by independent medical institutions (more than 1,100 institutions) and a small number (just over 40) of individual entrepreneurs.

As noted above, the structure of the Moscow dental clinic market is relatively small. Only 12 networks have 6 or more branches. It is noteworthy that among the top 25 largest Russian medical brands at the end of 2014 (according to RBC), there is only one purely dental brand - the MEDI clinic system. It consists of 22 clinics, located mainly in St. Petersburg, with a total turnover of 1.67 billion rubles. There are no Moscow specialized dental networks in this rating. The capital companies present in it are multidisciplinary, providing, among other things, dental services.

Large dental chains in Moscow

Despite the fact that the number of network clinics in Moscow does not exceed a third of the total number, several large market participants have emerged in recent years. Eight networks have more than 10 branches.

Dental network "PRESIDENT+IMPLADENT"

The largest network in terms of the number of branches (23 at the time of the Vademecum study, 31 at the beginning of 2022), which was created through the merger of two popular capital brands “PRESIDENT” and “IMPLADENT”. The larger PRESIDENT was formed in 1999 and almost immediately began to actively develop. ImplaDent was created later, in 2010. After the merger, the network became the undoubted leader in the capital's dental services market. She confidently enters all ratings. For example, in the Annual Professional Rating of Dental Clinics in Russia, published at the end of 2016 by StartSmaile magazine with the help of Kommersant Publishing House, PRESIDENT took 5th place in the country and 3rd in Moscow. The evaluation criteria were the level of equipment of medical institutions, the treatment technologies used and the qualifications of specialists.

Network of dental clinics “All Yours!”

This network is currently represented in Moscow by 20 clinics (at the time of the study, that is, at the beginning of 2016 - 19 institutions). It was created in 2005 and within 12 years it has become one of the leaders in the capital’s market. The main focus of the clinic is on the budget segment of dental services. This allows the network to develop even in conditions of a general recession, without closing existing clinics, but opening new ones. The pace of development of the network is second only to the undisputed leader - the association “PRESIDENT + IPLADENT”.

Multidisciplinary network "Medsi"

The Medsi network of multidisciplinary clinics is the largest private medical network with revenue of 9.7 billion rubles at the end of 2014. It occupies a confident 1st place in the ranking of domestic medical networks. One of the important areas of activity is the provision of dental services; in Moscow alone there are 16 branches. The network was created in 1996; it turned out to be one of the few that increased the volume of services provided in 2014, not only in value terms, but also in physical terms. The average bill in the same year was 7,542 rubles.

Multidisciplinary network "Family Doctor"

The network of private multidisciplinary clinics “Family Doctor” was created in 1995 in the form of a service that provides services for calling a doctor to your home. The first clinic was opened in 2002. Currently, the network is represented by 19 family medical institutions, all of which are located in the capital. It ranks 15th among the largest companies operating in medicine, with a turnover of 1.9 billion rubles at the end of 2014. All family clinics have dental departments, whose work makes a significant contribution to the overall revenue of the multidisciplinary network. The average bill in 2014 was 7,333 rubles.

Dental network "Unident"

The specialized network "Unident" was created in 2007. At the beginning of 2016, it was represented by 14 clinics, in 2022 – already 17th. All of them are located in Moscow. The Unident brand is one of the most famous, present in almost all ratings compiled on the basis of surveys and popularity data.

Dental network "Denta-El"

The specialized network of dental clinics “Denta-El” was created in 1996 and is one of the oldest in Moscow. Currently, it is provided by 12 medical institutions, all of them located in the capital.

Multidisciplinary network "Dobromed"

The network of family clinics "Dobromed" was created in 1996. Currently, it consists of 17 medical institutions, 12 of which are located in Moscow (the rest are in the Moscow region). The brand is known in the capital's market, which is why it is included in most different ratings.

Large dental clinics in Moscow

As data from a study of the Moscow dental market has shown, almost two-thirds of it are made up of clinics that are not part of any network structures. At the same time, they may not be as well known as some networks, however, they are important and very visible participants and players in the market. Based on the results of 2016, several Moscow clinics became the leaders of the already mentioned Russian Professional Rating StartSmaile.

Private Dentistry Center Dr. Levin

The center was created in 2003 as the clinical base of Nobel Biocare, one of the leaders in world dentistry. An important factor was also the fact that the support was provided by leading and most qualified specialists from the clinics of the State Medical and Dental University (MGMSU) located in Moscow.

The head physician of the center is D.V. Levin. The establishment specializes in providing premium services, focusing mainly on wealthy clients.

German Implantology Center

A clinic called “German Implantology Center” was opened in 2010 on the Taras Shevchenko embankment, and a branch was recently opened on Michurinsky Prospekt. A special feature of the center is deservedly considered to be the high level of technical equipment of the clinic and the qualifications of practicing specialists who regularly undergo training in institutions in Germany, Italy and a number of other countries.

Vladimir Novikov Center for Personal Dentistry

One of the oldest Moscow clinics, one of the leaders in the StarSmile Professional Rating, was founded in 2002. In 2010, it joined the European Economic Chamber, which imposes strict requirements on its members and ensures a uniform European standard of customer service. Since its foundation, the general director of the center has always been leading specialist V.S. Novikov.
